Job Description

FM is a leading property insurer of the world's largest businesses, providing more than one-third of FORTUNE 1000-size companies with engineering-based risk management and property insurance solutions. FM helps clients maintain continuity in their business operations by drawing upon state-of-the-art loss-prevention engineering and research; risk management skills and support services; tailored risk transfer capabilities; and superior financial strength. To do so, we rely on a dynamic, culturally diverse group of employees, working in more than 100 countries, in a variety of challenging roles.

The Emerging Risk research group at FM is seeking a highly motivated and talented individual for a post-doctoral fellowship focused on risk assessment and mitigation strategies for next-generation energy systems, with a primary emphasis on advanced nuclear technologies, such as small modular reactors (SMRs) and microreactors.

The scope of the role may also extend to other emerging risk domains, including grid resilience, energy storage systems, and carbon capture. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to research that supports the safe and reliable deployment of these technologies, helping to inform engineering practices, risk management strategies, and insurance decision-making. The selected candidate will work closely with experienced professionals across disciplines and have opportunities to publish findings that address real-world challenges in the evolving energy landscape.

Responsibilities:

Conduct research on the safety, reliability and risk implications of advanced nuclear reactor technologies and other emerging energy systems.
Develop and apply quantitative and qualitative risk assessment methodologies, including but not limited to probabilistic risk assessment, system reliability modeling, and scenario analysis.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate research findings into engineering guidelines.
Analyze data and model outputs to identify key risk drivers and propose mitigation strategies.
Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at technical conferences and industry forums.

Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering, Energy Systems, Risk Assessment, or a related field.
Demonstrated experience in advanced nuclear technologies (e.g., SMRs, Gen IV reactors) and/or emerging energy infrastructure.
Proficiency in risk modeling tools and statistical analysis software.
Familiarity with regulatory frameworks and safety standards in the energy sector.
Strong analytical, communication, and collaboration skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team.

This position is for a limited term of up to three years, renewable each year. This position will be based out of our FM Office located in Norwood MA, USA. The role is typically focused on performing publishable work as part of a strategic research program under the guidance of a program manager or other senior research staff member(s).

The final salary offer will vary based on geographic location, individual education, skills, and experience. The position is eligible to participate in FM's comprehensive Total Rewards program that includes an incentive plan, generous health and well-being programs, 401(k) plan, career development opportunities, tuition reimbursement, flexible work, time off allowances and much more.

FM is an Equal Opportunity Employer and is committed to attracting, developing, and retaining a diverse workforce.
